GRAND PARADE c.1880s/1890s

The Grand Parade is not only Cape Town’s birthplace, but also its historical heart. For over 300 years people have congregated here to market their wares, celebrate, pray and protest – from solo soapbox rants to mass demonstrations. It was the scene for many royal celebrations too, the most notable being the celebration of Prince Albert’s wedding in 1963 when the British Governor presided over the roasting of an ox on the parade. Many great people, from General Smuts to Nelson Mandela, have made their mark on the city here.
