A look at Cape Town long ago
VICTORIA ROAD c.1890s
Flanked by the Atlantic Ocean and the majestic Twelve Apostles mountain range, Victoria Road meanders along the coast from Sea Point to Hout Bay, making it one of Cape Town’s most beautiful roads. Built by Thomas Bain using convict labour, Victoria Road was completed in 1888 and named after Queen Victoria in honour of the fiftieth anniversary of her coronation. The new road opened Camps Bay to tourism as visitors no longer had to take the dangerously steep road over Kloof Nek. A toll had to be paid for the privilege at the toll house where Victoria Road joined Kloof Road from Sea Point, until around 1900.
